Compliance with country-specific regulations and standards
There are many different standards and guidelines worldwide for the design and construction of industrial shelving and racking. In general, some of the relevant standards are recognised worldwide, while others are country-specific.
Here are some of the most important international standards governing the construction of industrial shelving and racking:
- In Europe, the construction of industrial steel shelving and racking is regulated by the European standard EN 15635which gives guidelines for designing, assembling and operating shelving and racking systems.
- The Fédération Européenne de la Manutention (FEM) has published the FEM 10.2.02 standard which applies specifically to pallet racking and is recognised throughout Europe.
- The European standard DIN EN 15620 outlines requirements and provisions on load carrying capacities, material selection, shelving and racking design, installation and maintenance. This standard is particularly important because it ensures that shelving and racking systems meet the required quality standards to avoid accidents or damage.
- Shelving and racking installations in the US are governed by the RMI ANSI MH16.1 standard issued by the Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The standard contains guidelines for the design, construction and testing of steel shelving and racking.
- In Australia and New Zealand, the AS4084-2012 standard is used for the assembly and construction of steel storage systems.
