Due to the excellent handling and picking performance as well as the constant availability of goods, automated pallet racking is a good choice when large product quantities have to be kept in stock. Either because products need to be stored temporarily between two process steps, or to hold a reserve if large fluctuations in consumption are to be expected. The aim is to avoid stock shortages and make sure that goods are permanently available, f. ex. for production. Fully automated pallet racking enables fast and error-free product supply at all times, e.g. when sales or production peaks occur. IMS or WMS technology guarantees that goods are always available, since stocktaking and reordering are carried out on an ongoing basis. Goods are stored very efficiently and in high density, usually on a random basis. The number of pallet positions increases significantly compared to manual systems. Automated pallet racking systems do not require large service aisles for employees and forklift trucks. Instead, stacker cranes move in narrow aisles and shuttle carriers reach into the lanes of each racking level, positioning pallets with utmost precision and minimal spacing. In addition, high-bay racking utilises the full height of a warehouse. Automated systems can store and retrieve pallets dynamically, i.e. storage positions can be assigned according to demand. Pallets carrying the most frequently used items can be stored in more easily accessible storage positions while less frequently used items are stored in the rear areas of a warehouse. This means that the available space will be used more efficiently. Based on specific parameters such as the type of product stored, turnover frequency and the expiry date, the assignment of storage positions can be optimised by an inventory or warehouse management system.
Fast computer-controlled handling
Particularly high turnover rates are achieved in an automated pallet racking facility, since goods are stored and retrieved computer-controlled at high speeds and on a continuous basis. Dynamic storage strategies ("random storage") also result in shorter travel times because frequently requested products are stored in easily accessible storage positions. There are usually no waiting times in automated warehouses, as the system is designed to work continuously. In addition, product picking can be automated, which further increases warehouse throughput.
