Our customer

The pet food manufacturer Vet-Concept GmbH & Co. KG near Trier, Germany, produces and sells high-quality dry and wet food, as well as pet food supplements, grooming products, chewing articles and other accessories. The products are sold mainly through the company operated online store, and there is also a small shop in Föhren for in-store pick-up. BITO has accompanied the company since its foundation. Meanwhile, Vet-Concept uses almost the entire BITO product portfolio and benefits from clean and tidy work areas and more efficient order picking.

Initial situation and customer requirements

Compliance with strict hygiene standards
The storage equipment must be suitable for heavy loads, such as bags of feed or canned wet food
Lightweight items such as grooming products, chewing articles and other accessories must also be accommodated.
Vet-Concept needed a near-100% availability of all items.
Since the product range has proven to be very successful over the years, every product has its dedicated storage position.
Vet Concept wanted existing processes to be maintained, but needed more storage capacity.

The BITO Solution

BITO Pallet racking facility

» The heavy bags of pet food as well as canned food are stored in pallet live racking providing a total of about 6,000 pallet positions.

Pallet flow storage levels on top

» The upper flow storage levels are used as buffer stock and for replenishing the live storage pick lanes at floor level height.

Storage in FIFO order

» Since pet food products are goods with an expiry date, products are stored in FIFO order in pallet as well as in carton live storage lanes.

Retrofitting static pallet racking

» Depending on their weight, products are either picked from pallets stored on the pallet racking floor level or from flow shelves that have been fitted to the racking uprights at operator reach height.

Small parts storage

» Smaller products are stored in BITO KLT containers.

Automated mini-load system (AS/RS)

» The approximately 400 different small items are stored in an AS/RS facility and made available for picking in a fully automated process.

On-site application and key features of our storage solution

A total of 14,000 square metres of storage and order picking space was created.
Of the 1,200 reference lines, 800 are stored in the pallet racking facility and 400 in the automated small parts warehouse.
High-bay pallet racking with 6,000 pallet positions
The racks are replenished at the rear side, orders are picked on the opposite side in a picking tunnel.
Some 70,000 items must be handled every day in the goods-in and the goods-out departments.

In what way has the BITO solution helped our customer to realise their full potential?

It is not only the consistent product range that enables Vet-Concept to guarantee a high degree of standardised processes.
Standardisation also ensures efficient workflows in the automated warehouse. Goods are stored exclusively in 400x600 mm cartons and suppliers must deliver their products in packaging of the same size to allow storage without further repackaging.
The large logistics hall is divided into two areas: Goods are loaded into a racking block at the rear and picked at the front. Goods are picked in a picking tunnel that separates loading from retrieval.
This saves a lot of space and keeps walking distances short.
The well-structured warehouse layout and standardised processes enable Vet-Concept to organise all processes efficiently, keep everything in view and in its place and process customer orders as quickly as possible.
The high demands on hygiene, product integrity and freshness are met at any time.
In cooperation with BITO, the manufacturer's logistics area was planned and designed to allow for sufficient buffer space. Further business growth is therefore possible without the need for a building extension or conversion.

Pallet live storage systems are ideal for fast-moving products. Sufficient replenishment quantities guarantee constant product availability. All items are in direct access at the picking face. Loading and retrieval are carried out in separate aisles which guarantees organised storage processes, with each lane being dedicated to a single reference line.

BITO Automated small parts storage

AS/RS systems consist of a racking system with aisles, a storage and retrieval machine, conveyor technology, trays and containers for small parts and a control software. They offer fast and direct access to every item of a large assortment and make optimum use of the available storage height.
